The Coffee: Psychology of Color The Cream/Sugar: Popcorn Cake!

The Coffee: Who knew that red encourages appetite? I always assumed colors were associated with emotions, but this infographic takes it another step by describing the Psychology of Color – what you should paint a room, how brands use colors and even that yellow makes babies cry.

If you are ready for a fix-er-upper for your apartment, home, or office decor here are some tips they suggest:

  • Paint your kitchen yellow becomes it evokes your metabolism
  • Blue for an office space because people are more productive
  • Paint a dining area red because it encourages appetite, but not a classroom because it is associated with poor achievement
  • Green environment  if you want to induce fewer stomach aches (not sure I agree with this one)

The Cream & Sugar: Last weekend/week I celebrated my lovely friend and roommate’s birthday with a few surprises. There is no shame in my apartment admitting we are popcorn addicts – we own a Whirley Pop, cheese spices and large popcorn bowls to prove it. Her favorite food, any day = popcorn.

SO I underwent the project of making a popcorn CAKE. The recipe was developed by Cookies And Cups, a fav food blog of mine, and I just HAD to try it.

The ingredients are simply:

  • (2) 12 oz bags of baking marshmellows (regular ones are fine, but they don’t melt as well)
  • 1 stick of butter (unless you are using bagged popcorn with butter on it)
  • 2 Large bags of popcorn or 4 handfuls is what I put in the Whirley Pop
  • One large bag of M&Ms -2 cups
  • One bag of stick pretzels, crushed – 1 1/2 cups

  1. Pop your corn, put in a bowl making sure to pick out all of the kernels
  2. Toss in M&Ms and Pretzels
  3. Melt butter/marshmallow in pot until smooth, let cool for a few seconds
  4. Pour over popcorn while mixing. This was REALLY hard, it was a gooey sticky mess and using my hands made my new name Popcorn Fingers.
  5. Spray your pan with Pam, literally, squish and stuff into cake pan ( I used a round bundt).
  6. Let cool for one hour and flip it onto a plate, BAM it slides right out into a beautiful cake!

 Then I proceeded to drizzle chocolate all over it because why not?

Never work before breakfast; if you have to work before breakfast, eat your breakfast first.

The Coffee: According to a recent post on Mashable, 95% of recruiters successfully hired candidates found through LinkedIn. A recent trend I’ve heard is hiring people without even meeting them in person. While social media can greatly help your career, it can also be a potential downfall.

You can be whoever you want to be on social media, so when it comes down to it, a good old fashioned in-person interview is how I would want to hire. Yes, social media, resumes, Twitter and Facebook can weed out the wackos, but in the end, you have to be able to work them. If you are looking for a job, make sure your social media precense is enough to get you that interview!

The Cream and Sugar: Although I am estatic to see the warm weather arriving, I was sad to say goodbye to March since it houses one of my favorite holidays. Restaurant Week Boston of-course!! My bf and I made reservations at Terramia Ristorante in the North End for an evening full of wining, dining and 3 courses each for only $33!!

Here is the menu we sampled:

Antipasta: The carpaccio was perfectly thin and not too salty, the zucchini flower was light and fresh
CARPACCIO DI BUE – Paper-thin beef, organic baby greens, lemon olive oil condiment, caper berries, Reggiano cheese
FIORE DI ZUCCA – Stracciatella cheese stuffed zucchini flower, petite arugula salad, honey truffle aioli

Primi: Let’s just say I died and went to heaven with fresh made pappardelle, truffle oil and goat cheese. Goat cheese!!
PAPPARDELLE CON RAGÙ DI CINGHIALE – House made Pappardelle pasta with wild Boar ragu, aromatic vegetables and Parmigianino cheese
RAVIOLI DI FUNGHI – Mushroom ravioli with Madeira veal Demi, crumbled goat cheese and truffle essence

Secondi The salmon was so tasty, and while my bf obviously enjoyed the beef, the puttanesca salad had his taste buds as well.
BISTECCA – Champagne marinated Beef short-rib, braised beet greens, short-rib ravioli, crispy leeks
SALMONE ALLA PUTTANESCA – Pan seared Sockeye salmon, Puttanesca salad, wild rice Florentine

And guess what? If all this Italian fair is too much for you, RestoWeek’s next endevour is Beer and Bacon Week! Yum!

“I am thankful for the mess to clean after a party because it means I have been surrounded by friends.”

The Coffee: Yesterday was the Superbowl, which means I’ve had my blog for 1 year! Woot! While my posts have most certainly become less intelligent, thanks for sticking with me through it all.

And since I’d rather talk about anything besides the Superbowl (big woof), I will commence with something totally unrelated.

Since I slipped on my first ballet shoes at the age of 3, there was certainly no question of my love for dancing, and nearly 20 years later, I am still drawn to anything dance – ballet, hiphop, lyrical, modern, jazz, tap – you name it, and I want to do it. Recently, I did a $1 workshop with Dance Works Boston, a dance company for girls outside of the early college years looking for an opportunity to continue their passion for movement, exercise and expression through music. Okay, while this video is slightly embarrassing, I did enjoy myself! See if you can spot me 😉

The Cream and Sugar: New year’s cheers-ing, old friend reminiscing, gimlet drinking, winter pond strolling, birchbox receiving, snowy heal trekking, football partying, gnocchi mac & cheese making, mechanical bull riding, $1 workshop dancing, birthday partying and haus music hopping – phew, that’s all you missed from my lack of posts. Here are two highlights! 

My mom riding a mechanical bull for her 53rd Birthday. Yes, Yes this real. This is going down in the memory books.

The gnocchi mac & cheese I made for my holiday dinner with my roomie! I can’t describe how good this is. Drop all things and make this as soon as possible. You won’t regret it!

The Coffee: Happy Movember! Is your boyfriend, husband, brother, uncle, father participating in Men’s Health awareness month? The men in my office are, can’t wait to see the pro growers (and not so pro) waltzing around trying to not look like pedifile bros. Yes, the Mo Bros are about and I fully support. Let’s face it; females get plenty of chance to support our health through nonsense Facebook posts (the what color underwear are you wearing trend etc).

The Cream and Sugar: The ironic part about this post is not my recent adaptation of cooking crazy good meals, it was what I was for Halloween in relation (you’ll see in a moment). Also, apologies for the shitty great crackberry photos.

Pumpkin Chocolate chip cookies, I have no idea what recipe I used, I used like eight different ones. Here is what I learned: pumpkin from a can makes them cakey so you must add more sugar than flour or else they feel like muffins. Or you can cheat by mix Betty Crocker’s Pumpkin Spice mix with choco chips ;).

I made this next meal mostly to use these burgers sitting in my freezer, but I ended up pretty impressed. (Sorry I started to eat it before taking the photo).

 Pan fried bbq Sirloin burgers with carmelized onion smothered in swiss cheese with oven-roasted carrots /asparagus /peppers /onions /sweet potatoes seasoned with rosemary, basil and EVOO. Cook the onions separately in a pan til soft, cook burger to desired temp. Veggies take about 30 mins in oven at 350.

I love couscous. I could eat a whole box in one sitting. This next meal is obviously overwhelmed by the heavenly substance.

Oven-roasted Atlantic Salmon with same above type veggies and parmesan couscous. Couscous takes about 5 mins, which is super convenient when you are focusing on the temperature of salmon. Veggies take about 30 mins in the oven at 350.

AND thus, here is what I was for Halloween: The three little pigs and my bf as the big bad wolf. Hence #fatty status

“It is a curious thought, but it is only when you see people looking ridiculous that you realize just how much you love them.”

The Coffee: 22 is a strange age to say the least. Recently when I met up with some girlfriends, we found the conversation took a turn to finance, bills, jobs and a vast array of serious things that I don’t want to worry about! I am determined to be responsible, but not sweat the small stuff. With a collegeless life in my palms, I’m finding new time to rekindle my hobbies. I am going to start painting again and fill the blank wall behind my bed with a glorious landscape (sunflowers involved). I am completing the Metro daily crosswords. I am writing. I am reading (just started a 10 book fantasy series). Optimism is my best friend today as I realize all the possibilities on the path to my quarter life! Don’t worry, I found time to begin my 401k and budget my monthly bills too 😉

The Cream and Sugar: I love Fall the same reason I love Spring, non-extreme hot/cold weather. Except for one exception: pumpkin.

Here are my favorite pumpkin things thus far:

Pumpkin Beer: I can not get enough of this stuff. I am a fan of Wachusett and ShipYard, not so much for Shock Top’s version.

Pumpkin K-Cups: We just starting getting these in the office and they are such a nice pick-me-up in the morning! I wonder what they would be like with a dash of cinnamon in them?

Pumpkin Pie: I made this recipe last year for Thanksgiving at my house and can’t wait to make it again! I use two recipes, one for the pie and one for the AH-mazing topping (seriously this topping makes it, and the pie recipe is a little healthier than the latter).

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies: I haven’t tried these yet, but it’s only a matter of time! This is the best recipe I found from SweetPea’sKitchen blog.

Put Down the Crackberry & Eat Cupcakes

The Coffee: I heard on the news last night that mobile phones affect our brains. This is old news. I know that I should be using a bluetooth headset so I can mess up my ears instead or use speakerphone so everyone can hear the private conversation I am having with my doc. Over and over we hear how “scientists are unsure”, and I would like to conclude that the human race is on its way towards extinction anyways so live it up! drink bailey’s! eat cupcakes! (see below)

The Cream and Sugar: My dream of becoming a famous food blogger was squashed when I discovered FoodGawker today. How on EARTH do people make food so beautifully scrumdidlyumptios?

Internships – Caffeine for your Career

The Coffee: For those of you pondering interning is just for wannabes, you are sadly mistaken. I completed two six-month internships, and I am now on my third. I do not even own a degree yet.

So what are the benefits of being presumably ignored by upper management, driving around the city in the company car, or fetching the food for a client meeting? Here are a handful of tips.

  1. Networking. Networking. Networking. Use LinkedIn, obtain letters of rec, make friends. More often than not, when I go on an interview I find the hirer asking more about who I know from here or there. Trust me, it will help you in the end when you try to land the BIG job.
  2. Learn miscellaneous talents. College most certainly does not teach you much (except how many shots it takes before you fall on the bar floor). I find I learn the most while working, following my colleagues, and taking notes. You would be surprised how much your boss dishes to little naive you!
  3. Decide a career. Well obviously. But seriously, if you hate your internship, you probably should not do it as a living.
  4. Patience. One of the most important things I learn is how to wait. You will have slow days. If you ask for work, it will come.
  5. Smile. Yes, it is true. A smile and positive attitude can really get you places. They’ll exclaim  “Oh that intern, she looks like she is having fun!”

The Cream and Sugar: How do people think of these things! This is something I only dream about!

I am talking about these sweet potato cinnamon rolls from one of my favorite food bloggers, So Good and Tasty. Literally my two favorite food splurges are sweet potato fries or anything with cinnamon. Thanks for making me wish I was anywhere but this darn cubicle.
